Ergonomic Consulting Services

Work related Musculo-Skeletal Disorders (MSD) are the focus of the recently gazetted Ergonomics Regulations in South Africa.

The nature of the disorders is makes it difficult to diagnose their origin or cause, and employers who have not complied with the new Ergonomics Regulations [maybe put a link here to the regs?] face the financial costs of treatment, downtime and even compensation for personal pain and suffering in some cases.

What this means, is that every employer in South Africa who does not have an Ergonomics Program in place, is at risk of criminal and civil prosecution, and forfeits his right to COID insurance (workman’s compensation).

MSDs do not only develop at work – employers need to protect themselves against exploitation by employees. The employer’s ergonomics programme will serve to achieve this.

Statistics in South Africa are sparse, but in the USA he total annual economic burden resulting from workplace MSDs added up to $54 billion in 2014. MSDs are a widespread and costly problem.

MSDs affect an extremely broad range of employees, and any task that requires repetition, awkward posture, forceful motion, stationary position, direct pressure, vibration, extreme temperature, noise, and work stress poses a risk to employee and employer.

RISK MITIGATION AND LEGAL COMPLIANCE

Step no 1 is conducting the ergonomics risk assessment. Based on this, an ergonomics program should be developed. The standard hierarchy of controls should be applied by employers – Elimination, Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, Personal Protective Equipment.

Our risk assessments are a combination of conventional on-site assessment and data collection, together with bespoke software risk calculators with final overview by professional registered ergonomists.
